Symbolism

Painted while in Seeg, Germany, Hell is a still life that is an introspective into the English meaning of the word 'hell' juxtaposed with the German meaning of the word, which is 'light'. While painting, I thought of Dante's Devine Comedy, which in part is inscribed in the background. The bottle has a label with a beautiful bucolic landscape and the word 'hell' written above it - symbolizing that not all is as it seems.

About

Hell was created using a combination of the Flemish and Venetian oil painting techniques.
