Symbolism
Formation symbolizes the history of religious oppression of women.
Maderno's marble sculpture of St. Cecilia after her martyrdom is symbolic of the rigidity of the framework women are formed in. The monk, his gaze averted while walking past her body, is symbolic of the disdain, ignorance, and disregard that religious culture has historically shown women.
About
Formation was created using a combination of the Flemish and Venetian oil painting techniques.
It was painted after an immersive 5-week trip to Italy.
